Timeless essentials get a colorful remix
What happens when you combine a Japanese global retailer with an Italian luxury fashion house?
You get Uniqlo x Marni, a collaboration that’s colorful, playful, and perfect for summer.
“It may seem like (Uniqlo and Marni) are complete opposites,” says Uniqlo Philippines assistant vice president for marketing Meggy Aguirre, “but in this collaboration we found a way to fuse both philosophies in this out-of-the-box proposition that combines the functionality, simplicity and fabric innovation of Uniqlo’s Lifewear with Marni’s playful spirit and energy.”
Since the SS2022 collection features vibrant colors and prints, Uniqlo Philippines enlisted two of Manila's most in-demand stylists, Maita Baello and Cath Sobrevega, to give tips on how Pinoys could incorporate pieces into their wardrobe.
Baello wore her favorites, an Open Collar Short Sleeve Pleated Dress under a Marni Pocketable Parka. “They’re so easy to wear, and I also love the convenience of this Pocketable Parka for travel,” she says. “When you’re not wearing it you can easily store it and bring it every day with you.”
Sobrevega did print-on-print, teaming the Oversized Long Sleeve Shirt with Relaxed Wide Straight Pants. “I'm all for functionality and comfort, so for me this is very off-duty and effortless,” she said. “This is really my style.”
If you’re a conservative dresser and think you could never pull off colors and prints, they say you can easily style the collection according to your comfort level: “Don’t fret because there are a lot of pieces that are also available in solid colors,” notes Sobrevega. “And then if you're feeling a little bit adventurous you can do one trend and then pair it with a neutral top. Or if that's too much for you, you can get the socks for a subtle pop of color.”
According to Baello, you can even wear Uniqlo x Marni to dressier events. “Absolutely. Like, for example, the men’s tailored jacket, you can wear it over a dressy shirt, maybe tailored pants and dressy shoes, and then you're good to go.”
For the ladies, she suggests pairing the dresses or Balloon Shape skirts with sneakers or loafers for day and then changing to heels at night, switching your day tote for a smaller bag or clutch.
Sobrevega said that print-on-print is not as tricky as it looks, and gave a few tips: “One, choose colors and shapes that complement each other; two, you can do prints in different shapes; or three, you can just limit yourself to two prints in one look, so you don't overwhelm yourself.”
