WATCH: Doctor busts 3 beauty, skincare myths

MANILA, Philippines — This summer, skin darkening and faster skin aging are among the top beauty concerns of Filipinas.

During a recent talk organized by a beauty supplement, Dr. Winlove Mojica, a dermatologist, busted three beauty and skincare myths that might do women more harm than good.

1. Moisturizers are not needed for anti-aging.

Contrary to some famous doctors’ claim that one does not need a moisturizer if you are into an anti-aging regimen, Mojica said the skin becomes thinner and drier when you become older, so you really need a moisturizer in your anti-aging regimen.

“(Apart) from your usual night creams and sunscreens, you need your moisturizer to even out the wrinkled skin because bright skin can appear more wrinkled,” he warned.

2. You have to exercise your face to keep it toned.

According to the doctor, there are also a lot of “fake news” when it comes to beauty trends, and among these are contraptions you need to buy to have a well-toned face. 

“But no, that is actually the opposite,” he stressed.

“If you exercise your muscles more, you would have more lines.”

He said that instead of massaging the face, dermatologists like him even inject medicines into the face to “relax” the skin and prevent deep, active lines.

“The loss of tone in the face is also secondary to loss of tissue or volume under the skin because there is less fat and the bone recedes. So, no amount of muscle exercise will improve it,” he explained. 

3. You should start your anti-aging beauty regimen when you are in your 40s.

“A common misconception will be I don’t need to start in sunscreens yet, light cream yet because I’m just 20. But wrong. The anti-aging process starts when you are a baby,” the doctor upheld.

“Extrinsic aging is secondary to sun exposure. So, if you start sun protection early, you start early in your night creams, as early probably in your 20s, then you will look 10 years younger from your actual age.”

According to him, as women age, their skin loses elasticity which results to the appearance of dark spots and fine lines that deepen over time. 

“Collagen production is essential for youthful-looking skin because it gives structure to our cells. But when you hit the age of 35, it begins to taper off.
