Why Malou Romero’s Joanique is unique
Looking at Joanique’s latest jewelry and minaudieres, one would never imagine that Malou Araneta Romero started barely four years ago when she joined Manila FAME. Mostly self taught, her brand has caught the attention of international publications such as Vogue, Le Mag Paris and Travelite.
Always hands-on, Malou not only oversees the design but also fastidiously selects the materials and stones to be used while overseeing the production of every piece. Each of her creations “must be worn in order to be understood,” with an elegant style in mind, yet uniquely Filipino as she raises awareness on the archipelago’s colorful past and cultural traditions.
During the recent intimate launch of the Maskara collection, I found out that Joanique is named after her children Joaquin and Monique, as suggested by her supportive husband Nikki Romero. He shyly mingled with the crowd and as we were introduced, he admitted that he was extremely proud of his lovely wife for her artistic accomplishments.
Known for their premium quality and craftsmanship, the jewelry pieces are handcrafted in high-quality sterling silver dipped in rhodium, yellow or rose gold using aventurine, agate, howlite, quartz, topaz and various semi-precious stones. Colorful hand-carved wooden bags caught our eyes with designs that range from vibrant Filipino masks (maskara) to dramatic ones influenced by the Venice Carnevale. One can easily use a minaudiere to a cocktail party and wear no other adornment, yet make a fashion statement.
Proudly Filipino yet global in design, Joanique was invited to the prestigious trade shows in Italy (Sept. 26-28) and Paris (Oct. 2-5).
“I am very proud to represent the Philippines as one of the few Filipino designers who participate in prestigious fashion exhibits. We’ve been participating in Paris for almost three years now and for the first time, we will be joining the Pitti Super Milan,” enthuses Malou.
