DIY: How to distress denim for high street fashion

Alixandra Caole Vila - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - Whether you’re looking to update your basics or wanting to shake things up a bit in your closet, "distressed jeans"  won’t cramp your style.

Create a mix of patterns and fascinating details to take street style up a notch.

Go for DIY high fashion. Here's how:

Materials:

  1. Denim of choice
  2. A sharp, brand new pair of scissors or blade
  3. Tweezers
  4. Sandpaper (optional)
  5. Pencil/chalk

Directions:

  1. Flip and fit the jeans and mark the areas you want to distress using chalk or pencil.
  2. Optional: If you want your jeans to look more ragged, grab a sandpaper and rub it in the marked areas for more grunge effect.
  3. Cut straight, horizontal slits (1/2-inch to 3/4-inch) on the areas you want to distress.
  4. Use the tweezers to pull out the threads.
  5. Wash it and let it dry.

While most of us love to put a twist to our everyday jeans, distressing isn't the only way to innovate. There are bleached jeans, glittered jeans and printed jeans.

You may also opt for jeans that rely heavily on beautiful tonal notes like Mossimo's latest collection. The contradicting concepts of confluence and dissonance are the main themes of the 2015 Fall and Holiday Collection, with the previous one offering visually organized chaotic looks with an eclectic beat while the latter showcases pieces that disrupt conventional fashion with a whirlwind of exuberant prints that sweep the season.
