Why we love Tan-Gan, Gaupo, Samson and Lustico
Despite my jetlag, I made sure that I would be able to attend the Salon 2014 featuring Lulu Tan-Gan, Cesar Gaupo, Dennis Lustico and Joey Samson because I knew that this show would purely showcase clothing without the drama and hype that seem to be the “in†thing with designers who want to be noticed.
It was enjoyable to see groups of well-dressed ladies that included lovely mother-daughter and sister duos who were present to view this buyer’s show. To add to the glamor of the evening, former ramp divas showed up not to walk down the runway but as part of the audience.
The sleek black runway in the Fairmont and Raffles Ballroom was the only focal point so our attention was solely on the clothes being paraded. Background music was kept to a minimum with a simple message: the clothes speak for themselves.
Lulu Tan-Gan’s concept has always been fashionable dressing that is uncomplicated, for daily use and travel-friendly, for women on-the-go. Retro was her inspiration with modernized versions of twin sets and dolman tops. The handprinted piña tops and skirts reminded one of springtime in Paris. It is important to note that Lulu cuts every piece of this ethereal fabric and oftentimes will fit the outfit on herself to see how it behaves as she sits, kneels and squats.
Cesar Gaupo’s talent for colors was evident as he matched olive yellow green with teal blue and fuchsia pink with vibrant purple. The skirts had interesting details that ranged from triangular-shaped hemlines, tulip skirts and maxi hems to Capri-length pants that finally ended with an all-black jersey chinoise-style pants outfit that had a partial red sleeve peeking out.
Dennis Lustico’s variety of styles ranged from playful shorts and asymmetrical skirts shredded fabric accents, draped dresses and a mod touch on sheath dresses that reminded one of a subdued Mondrian look.
Joey Samson’s theme was definitely inspired by athletics with models carrying balls and wearing sports footwear as they walked the runway. Tailor-made ensembles in navy, maroon, off-white and brown were the main colors for his collection.
