Kiss dry and scary lips goodbye!

STYLE S.O.S. - The Philippine Star

DEAR RISSA,

I dislike lip glosses because they feel so sticky on the lips. I really prefer matte lipstick. They look pretty in pictures, but the matte effect is so drying on the lips. My boyfriend hates the look and says it’s like kissing a corpse. Please recommend a lipstick that gives a nice pop of color without looking dry and scary.

REENA C.

Kissable lips start with well-conditioned lips. It helps to prep your puckers with a lip balm or lip salve. For me, conditioning the lips is a big beauty essential. Just the same way we diligently moisturize our faces, we should make it a habit to care for our lips, too. The skin on our lips is one of the thinnest on our body and very prone to dryness. What I do is apply Carmex before I even start my makeup. After I’ve done my whole makeup routine and I’m ready to apply my lipstick, I press my lips on the tissue to blot off any excess lip balm. This gives a smooth and supple base for any lip color.

Unlike you, I’m personally not a fan of matte lipstick. But there’s one lipstick that finally changed my mind. You must try Becca Ultimate Matte Lip Colour (available at Adora, Greenbelt 5). It was true love at first swipe! Available in eight intense shades, these lipsticks are impressively hydrating while providing an ultra-matte finish. They hydrate so superbly that they don’t magnify dry skin on dehydrated lips — even wrinkled or mature lips look sexy and supple. I adore how it glides on the lips with high impact and intense color that does not dry the lips. Its long-wearing formula wonderfully stays in place, too! They’ve been staples in my bag right now for summer because they’re so lightweight on the lips — you not only look fresh but feel fresh, too!                                 RISSA

Breakouts on chin: The tooth and nothing but

DEAR LUCY,

Except for the chin area where I always have breakouts, I have pretty good skin. What seems to be the problem?

ALEX

I asked Dr. Sylvia Huang, who is a very good dermatologist and I will share with you what she had to say. See, like you, I am prone to breakouts also on the chin area, but I barely had to deal with this problem when I followed Dr. Sylvia’s advice, which was not to use toothpaste that had fluoride. Fluoride can really be the culprit. And even if you are careful not to let the toothpaste run down your chin, the fact that it touches your lips (which is obviously in an area very near the chin) will still have an effect on the chin. Try it. Avoid using toohpaste with fluoride and your breakouts will stop. Worked for me.
