A smooth, crease-resistant, matt-have eye shadow
Dear Rissa,
I have two questions: One is for my mother and the other, for me. We are both looking for new eye shadows. My mother wants an eye shadow that does not make the creases or lines on her eyelids more prominent. We noticed that most eye shadows make the wrinkles on the eyelids more obvious. Can you recommend one? I’m looking for a new shade I can use to do a smokey eye. I’m a bit tired of the typical black and brown smokey eye shadow look. Any suggestions?
Kim
Your mom should avoid eye shadows with too much shimmer — these tend to accentuate fine lines on the eyelids. For your mom, get her the Becca Eye Colour Powder Demi-Matt (P1,550, available only at Adora Department Store, Greenbelt 5, Makati). The Demi-Matt range of Becca eye shadows is the perfect marriage of an elegant matte finish (without the dry, flat, blah effect) and micro-fine shimmer, giving radiance to mature eyes.
This is one of the eye shadows that have wowed me because it glides on so smoothly, effortlessly, and very evenly (even if I just apply them using my fingers). This eye shadow is fade-resistant and crease-resistant — yes, color doesn’t settle in the fine lines and wrinkles of the eyelids, making mature eyes actually look younger than they are.
Use it dry for a soft wash of color or apply it wet with a damp eye shadow brush for a more intense effect. I own this in the shade Tweed (a warm burnished brown), and I noticed Becca eye shadows are so highly pigmented with great color intensity, even a little goes a long way! Shades to get in Becca Eye Colour Demi-Matt: Linen (a soft dreamy peach) and Chiffon (a pale silvery mint) are soft wearable hues that beautifully brighten the eyes.
As for you, instead of the usual black or brown smokey eye, I suggest you try olive. It combines a hint of warm green with the familiarity of everyone’s favorite brown. Get the Becca Eye Colour Powder Demi-Matt in the shade Boucle, an olive-tinged brown. Or if you’re a fan of shimmer, try the Becca Eye Colour Powder Shimmer (P1,550, available only at Adora Department Store, Greenbelt 5). The shades Chintz (a khaki gold shimmer) and Shantung (an antique bronze shimmer) may at first seem like your typical browns for smokey eyes but when applied, these are smokey eye colors that will be intriguingly different.
Lastly, finish your look by applying Becca Eye Colour Powder Shimmer in Satin (a beige-gold shimmer) to your brow bones and in the inner corners to open up your eyes.

At 45, tight may not be so right
Dear Lucy,
I am 45 years old, in great shape, but I still want to wear really tight clothes. I am partial to Herve Leger, but my 18-year-old daughter says I should not be wearing mini skirts anymore at my age! What do you think?
Guada
I am happy to note how confident you are and that you really seem to be in good shape! Although there are really no hard and fast rules when it comes to fashion, I am inclined to personally agree with your daughter more. You can still show off your shape in clothes that are not too tight by choosing those that skim closely over your body, as opposed to those that really hug it tightly. And when you do wear something that is already quite tight, maybe you can make up for it by going for a length that is not too short.
Unless you are performing or you are a rock star, something that is just a little bit above the knee will be your most tasteful choice at 45. Think along the line of Donna Karan’s clothes. The length is almost always by the knee, even as it embraces the female form most beautifully.
