Is there a foundation that is fool-proof?  I really do not have the time, much less the patience, to try on one after the other until I find the perfect match. I ask my friends and they have different recommendations, which confuse me all the more. Please give some tips on do-it-yourself hair dyeing.

I do my own coloring, too. Here are some tips for boosting color at home:

• Don’t shampoo before coloring. Natural oils that protect the scalp during dyeing will be stripped.

• Only go one or two shades away from your natural hair color. Don’t assume you’ll get the shade on the box if your hair already has color on. Do a strand test if in doubt.

• Before dyeing, apply baby oil or petroleum jelly around your hair, ears, and nape of your neck to protect skin from staining.

• Start timing once you have finished applying all the dye and watch the clock to avoid mishaps.

• Wash with a clarifying shampoo to help remove some of the color. Maxi Wash by Kevin Murphy contains AHAs to exfoliate and cleanse.

• Condition every time you wash. Walgreens, an on-line shopping site, recommends Joico Color Endure Conditioner or Pantene Pro-V Moisturising  Essential Hydrating Rinse to prevent color loss.
