Give your back a break, says Dr. Anton Cancio

Ali’s back: Chiropractor Dr. Anton Cancio attends to basketball star Ali Peek who suffers from middle and lower back pains.

Dear Rissa,

I’m flat-footed — is it okay to wear heels?

Ms. Flat Feet

I have a good friend who is flat-footed as well and I would occasionally see her wear heels. According to chiropractor Dr. Anton Cancio, being flat-footed is either hereditary or acquired. A majority of flat-footed people are born with it while a small number acquire the condition when the joints of their feet roll inwards, causing flat-footedness. This is usually the case for overweight men and women. Once flat-footed, it cannot be reversed or corrected.

So can flat-footed women wear heels?

“It’s a matter of comfort,” Dr. Cancio states. He explains that it’s definitely more difficult for the flat-footed. Normal-footed women who always wear heels will tend to experience back pains. When you’re flat-footed, you can expect even more aches than that. “You can wear heels, but it’s not advisable for everyday use,” he cautions.

To minimize foot discomfort, he recommends placing an arch support insert in your shoes. These pads help minimize the pain. Another alternative is to wear wedges. Stilettos can be unstable and will mean more work for your back. Wedges are a more comfortable alternative.

Chiropractic helps relieve low back pains. Sexy Eyes, Sexier Lips

Double treat: Nars Tzarine Eyeshadow Duo is a shimmering golden-toned champagne and darkened grey with silver sheen. Available at Rustan’s Essenses

Dear Lucy,

I have a friend who has a lot of makeup already but pretty as she is, she sticks to the safe neutral shades. It will be her birthday soon and I am looking at giving her something more exciting that will not be so intimidating for her to use.

Also, I have a problem with lipliners, they make my lips look so harsh and thin. Why wear a lipliner anyway?

Quincy

I always say that when you want o break away from the neutral mode, blue is the first color you must embrace. It is exciting and flattering, but not wild at all. You can get your friend shadow pencil from Nars in palladium. It is a beautiful turquoise that, when applied properly, will make anyone look pretty. It will highlight and illuminate the eyes very well. Get her also her favorite neutrals, but in a more exciting variant.  Look for Nars eyeshadow duo in Tzarine (available at Rustan’s), it is my new favorite and will render sexy eyes. I use the platinum gold and silver shade even during the day — just a light dusting of it over my lids before I curl my lashes and put on mascara.

For lipliners, the trick there is to warm the tip with your fingers before lining your lips. By doing this, the color does not go on like a careful illustration, instead it will make your lips appear fuller and thus younger and sexier. Laura Mercier (available at Rustan’s) and MAC have nice formulas, creamy enough to go on smoothly and comfortably.

Wy wear a lipliner?  So that you prolong the wear of all lip colors and prevent bleeding.                                         LUCY

Rx: Getting rid of wrinkles without pain

Dear Ms. Tingting,

Dream cream: Sisleya Anti-Age combines natural plant extracts for total skincare for face and throat. Available at Rustan’s

I am in search of an alternative wrinkle-fighting method — other than botox — that is painless.

What can you advise?

Grace

There are so many anti-wrinkle products now that have gotten good reviews, all age-defying formulas that diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After 28 to 30 days of application, muscle cells contract after skin absorption. Three products I highly recommend are Vichy Liftactive CxP, La Roche-Posay Redermic Plus Intensive Daily Anti-Wrinkle Cream, and Sisleya Anti-Age.
