Beaded glory
Binky Ilusorio doesn’t believe in following trends. “Get to know yourself,” she says. “Trends come and go, but if you know what you like and what works for you, wear it proudly and enjoy!” Out of these sentiments came Double Happiness, a collection of one-of-a-kind neckpieces and bracelets launched in 2003 by the former fashion editor while taking on styling and writing assignments on the side. While going for the clean, minimalist style, Binky could not ignore her love of unique accessories. Relaunched last year under the name Binky’s Beads, the collection still carries the same classic aesthetic of understated elegance and timeless chic. “I wanted to attach my name to the line,” Binky explains. “People know me as Binky, so I figured I might as well use it.” By the way, she was baptized Anna Kristina, and how she became Binky is another story.
Made of semi-precious stones, Binky’s beaded beauties are not the kind you will wear for only one season. “I have clients who have been coming to me from the very start and they still love the pieces they got then,” says the UP clothing technology graduate. “When I make something for someone, I consider her personality and preferences, and then put my own spin on it.”
Binky started beading because she wanted something different from what was readily available on the market. She doesn’t duplicate an item exactly. “Some pieces may have similarities in either materials or coloration, but no two are exactly alike,” she points out.
What also makes Binky’s Beads different from others are the unusual color combinations and use of uncommon beads and components. “I love my Buddhas! I find myself rubbing their bellies for good luck when I wear them,” Binky relates. She also likes the mystic knot, a symbol of endless love which represents a long life free from separations and heartaches. She also leans towards carved beads. She transforms the natural beauty of agate, jade, jasper, rock crystal, black onyx, turquoise, tiger eye, and other gems into pieces you can wear now and many years down the road. She uses sterling silver clasps exclusively. She is a stickler for quality, and prides herself on her attention to detail. Stones with even the smallest defects are set aside and find their way to pieces for her personal use.
Although she has been doing this for several years now, Binky has chosen not to turn it into a full-blown business venture. “I make every single piece myself. I can’t imagine having to fill an entire store!” she laughs.
On Saturday, October 4, Binky’s Beads will be at the US Embassy Club’s semi-annual Shoppers’ Day bazaar at the World Trade Center. On November 16, Binky’s pieces will be available at the International Bazaar Fair 2008 “Hearts and Hands for Charity” at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum, CCP Complex.
