Out with the skinny: Here come the wide-leg jeans

The problem with fashion these days is just when you’ve gotten ahold of that trend and made it your own, in comes another one that completely negates the last trend.

Take, for example, skinny jeans. The Hong Kong Chinese have been wearing them with big tops since the late ’90s and it took Filipinos almost a decade to catch on. Now that everybody’s wearing them, style blogs are telling us it’s all about the wide-leg jean.

Personally I never got on the skinny jeans bandwagon because I’m a believer that most skinny jeans are for skinny people. I felt like a small chorizo every time I tried them on at stores.

The closest I probably got to wearing skinny jeans was a style we wore in the ’80s called “baston.”

I also wore these wonderful slim stretch jeans from Salad, which I liked for a while recently until I discovered the wonders of wide-leg jeans.

I found the perfect pair from Zara Woman. Wide-leg jeans are not like your boot-cut or bellbottoms that flare down from the knees.

If you understand a bit of pattern making, wide-leg jeans have a straight line on the side seams, flaring out from the hip. But buyers beware: they’re not supposed to be too detailed or wide on the hem that they look like ’90s skater pants.

I find it easier to move around in wide-leg pants, especially at my age when comfort comes before fashion. It’s easier to sit in the car and put my legs up on my office chair. It does wonders for an old woman’s blood circulation.

Wide-leg jeans can be worn with heels or sneakers and can be dressed up and down. Just look at these photos showing how fashionable celebrities wear them.
