All eyes on the smoky look
April 18, 2007 | 12:00am
Dear Lucy,
I do not like a cakey look, but when I put on my foundation, dust it with powder, and sweep on some blush, that is exactly what I get. My complexion looks flawless but dry. Short of jumping up and down to make me sweat a little and set my makeup, are there any products I can apply? Is there an eye pencil with a creamy formula that glides easily along the eyelids for a smoky look?
Justine
I think it would help if you use products with a subtle sheen. For instance, you can mix your foundation with a radiance cream for a dewy look. What I do though is use blush that will add luminosity to the face. I like the new cheek colors from Laura Mercier, in Orange Blossom (a sheer pink peach with gold pearl) and Winter Bloom (a neutral sun-kissed pink with gold and pink pearl). It is very sheer and will allow skin to really show through, plus its long-wearing formula allows the color to stay true all day. Still from Laura Mercier (available at Rustan’s), try its Kohl eye pencil. I find black too harsh so I always go for the fun color. What I got as a gift recently were the Antique Jade and Stormy Grey. The new formulation releases more pigment than the traditional eye pencil, which allows for easier smudging to create a soft, smoky eye. It is also formulated for use on the inside of the eye although I have not tried that yet.

Dear Rissa,
I have a nine-to-five job that keeps me cooped up in the office all day. The skin on my face tends to get dry from the air-conditioning. I use a face moisturizer, but I’d like to further moisturize my skin by using a face mask. Are there moisturizing masks I can buy? I usually only see face masks for firming. Also, I have some trouble sleeping at night. Is there a product you can suggest to help me sleep? I’d like to avoid sleeping aids/pills, please.
Kathy
Face masks can spell the difference between good and great skin. When the seasons change, your skin changes, too. Try to use a facial mask at least three times a month, especially at the end of summer and the end of the colder months. Facial masks can be like a much-needed spring cleaning, it helps exfoliate your skin and remove any buildup of sluggish cells. A face mask can also help keep your pores unclogged and help clear up blemishes. Face masks can work wonders for your skin and leave it feeling fresher and cleaner day after day. Try ModelCo Face Lift Hydrating Face and Neck Mask (exclusively available at Beauty Bar). It rejuvenates the neck and face area with an intense moisture boost. A big bonus is that it contains antiaging properties that brighten, firm, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Skin appears younger, softer, and more radiant  everything your skin needs in one mask. Why I love this? Each mask is already pre-cut into a unique shape to fit your face and neck (an area women tend to neglect). It’s already specially shaped with holes for the eye, nose, and mouth area. It’s a perfect travel companion and easy to use anywhere you go. Really mess-free.You can also try The Face Shop’s Mask Sheets (stores located at Bonifacio High Street, The Fort; Glorietta 2, Makati; SM Mall of Asia; and SM North Edsa). They come in very handy sachets that are easy to carry in your purse. The Face Shop’s Mask Sheets come in so many variants that will surely answer your different skin needs. They have a ceramide mask sheet, collagen mask sheet, caviar mask sheet, pearl mask sheet, and also an overall mask sheet that covers the face and neck. When I tried it, it smelled so good and relaxing. Plus, it thoroughly hydrates even after one use. It really nourishes your dry skin and you really see a noticeably smoother and brighter complexion the next day. Like you, I also have trouble sleeping  especially when I have a lot of work on my mind at night! I’ve never really tried taking any sleeping aid or any herbal pill. Most of the time, I just do some work till I fall asleep. Knowing that I’m such a night owl, a friend gave me Badger Sleep Balm (exclusively available at Rustan’s Essenses), a calming sleep enhancer. Badger Sleep Balm doesn’t force you to be sleepy. The aroma actually clears your thoughts and eases your mind. It’s really a big help for people like me who can’t sleep when their minds are overactive. It’s a great sleeping aid and works for me. What I like about it is that it comes in a handy sized tin that’s easy to bring wherever I go or travel. Another plus  it contains essential oils like ginger (imparts a feeling of balance), citrus (for cheering and uplifting), rosemary (a traditional herb for good memory and clear thinking), balsam fir (smells like a refreshing walk in the forest!) and lavender (the perfect fragrance to relax your mind). The recommended use is to rub a little on the pulse points of your wrists or temples, or massage a little on the neck and shoulders. My favorite way of using it? This can also double as a lip balm to hydrate your lips as you sleep. Literally a great goodnight kiss to sleep!

Dear Tingting,
I would like to ask where I can get custom-made shoes, as I have small feet (size 33-34), and it is difficult to buy shoes in stores as they don’t have my size.
I would appreciate it if you could provide the address and phone number.

I’m sure they can fashion out something to match your dainty little feet and budget.
