What is proper funeral attire?

JUST ASKING - JUST ASKING By Mary H. Prieto -
Dear Mary,

What is the proper attire for men and women during a funeral? I find it offensive seeing guests in rugged jeans and T-shirts.

Sonya

You are quite right. It is not correct but sometimes people’s closets are full of jeans and T-shirts and little else. Ideally, during a funeral men would wear more solemn attire befitting the occasion, like barongs. Women should wear simple, tasteful clothes and avoid loud colors. To play safe, go for the usual somber black and white.

Man & Mistress
Dear Mary,

Don’t you just hate it when men bring their mistresses/girlfriends to events where friends of the wife are present? I think it’s rude and totally disgusting.

Mother Teresa

Yes, men should not bring their mistresses anywhere or anytime.

To Return The Regift
Dear Mary,

I received an obviously recycled gift, a pen with my friend’s (the giver’s) name on it. Should I return it to her or just keep quiet? She was even bragging that she had me in mind when she bought it.

Tina

I think you should return it. It’s in very poor taste to be giving recycled gifts.

Keeping Up With Jones
Dear Mary,

My married name is Susan Cruz Smith (Smith is my husband’s surname). I have been widowed and will marry Mr. Jones. Is it okay for me to use Susan Smith Jones as my new name? Just so my children (in their teens) will feel a link to their mother’s name?

Mrs. Smith

Yes, it’s okay for you to use Smith Jones as your new name. Yes, it’s correct.
