Kiko Pangilinan: Matching style with substance
June 14, 2006 | 12:00am
Makeovers are always fun, but it takes on new meaning when we do over someone who actually has the means and proper legalese needed to put us in jail for committing the crime of fashion over-indulgence. The fashion industry collides with the political arena as "M" dresses up lawyer and Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan.
The challenge: Inject more color and contemporary cuts into the senators wardrobe. The hardworking majority leader (he is the youngest to assume the post since Philippine Congress was restored in 1987) and author and sponsor of the Anti-Domestic Violence Bill, as well as the bill effecting National Human Rights Consciousness Week. Pangilinan says that his dress choices usually involve a white shirt and comfortable dress pants (he alternates between solid black and khaki). For formal occasions, expect him to wear the standard white shirt-black suit yawn-inducer. Between making official trips and trying to lead the passing of the 2006 national budget, the senator can barely wedge in shopping trips to the mall or log time onto GQ.com for the latest in mens fashion. Reveals his assistant Pia Artadi, "He was just wearing generic-brand watches for years before KC (his daughter) gifted him with a Philippe Stein last year."
The style crew: Move over, Carson. Those tasked to ruffle the senators feathers did so with unabashed eagerness and shameless honesty (carefully dished out with the requisite "Sir," of course). The crew was composed of top model Valerie delos Santos, a graduate of certificate courses in Successful Styling for Photography and Fashion Forecasting from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York; Maybelline New York local makeup artist Barbi Chan; and Philippine STAR columnist and fashion stylist Ana Kalaw.
The course of action: Striped shirts in youthful colors, trendier alternatives for casual occasions, a more stylish do, and posing for photos sans spectacles.
Barbi first applied hair wax to the senators hair to add more texture. She also suggested applying hair color to his visible gray hair. She then applied gel to muss up his bangs, a trendier alternative to Sen. Kikos penchant for just washing-and-wearing.
Valerie and Ana took turns providing ensembles with splashes of color: a purple tie, a casual light blue shirt, bold green stripes. Barbi butted in with a sleek black and beige ensemble, completed by elongated, square-toe loafers, something the senator derisively associated with former actor Tony Ferrers wardrobe.
The majority won regarding the matter about the eyeglasses.
The feedback: "I actually enjoyed myself. Im actually wondering if there will be a part two," said the young senator. The former TV anchor showed a relaxed disposition in front of the camera, welcomed having his hair styled, and displayed a deadpan humor with regard to the ensembles he had to don. Though Senator Pangilinan didnt take the suggestion that he highlight his hair too seriously, we believe he might actually consider putting a bit more color in his wardrobe.
