What to wear the mourning after
May 17, 2006 | 12:00am
Dear Mary,
Im a recently widowed working mom and Id like to know what colors are appropriate to wear aside from black and white. Is it okay for me to wear red accessories? How about red shoes and bag? By the way, we dont wear uniform at the office.

Red is a social no-no when you are in mourning and you want to show respect for the memory of a dearly departed. Wearing black is not a teaching or requirement of the church, but its a custom thats been ingrained for ages in many foreign countries (in the old days in England, widows even wore a black veil) and cultures. On the other hand, white seems to be more reflective of Gods promise of eternal life after death so even the priests wear white when they say the necrological Mass. If you really want to depart from the trite black and white, you can probably try something on the gray side or even mauve (dark purple). You can accessorize with a bit of gold or silver to break the monotony.

Dear Lucy,
I read in one of your articles that you love storing your shoes in boxes and you took pictures of them so you know what shoe is in what box. Im just wondering how you keep your shoes looking brand-new even though they are kept in boxes. I myself like keeping my shoes in boxes, but unfortunately, when I open the boxes, the shoes I havent used in a long time have cracked heels and insoles. Some of those in nubuck leather are deformed and have discolored. Also, how do you keep clothes that have long been in the closet from smelling musty and getting moldy? I keep my formal clothes in a plastic cover with hanger. But sadly, they still get moldy. Any tips youd like to share?

I am very careful with my shoes because I want to make them last a long, long time. For starters, I always clean them after use. The soles especially, I try to take out as much dirt as I can by wiping it with a cloth. I use another clean cloth to wipe and clean the body. Then for those with closed toes, I stuff them with paper so they do not get deformed. Shoes that crack or break apart on you are probably those you do not use regularly or have stored improperly. Take measures to ensure proper care. Try to rotate the use of your shoes and even if you do not use some pairs regularly, take those out of the box so they can breathe. The same goes for clothes. Always make sure they are clean before storage and if you store them in plastic, try to take them out once in a while.

Hi, Tingting!
Id like to know what would be best to wear to a garden wedding. Im just a guest, not part of the wedding entourage. I dont want it to be too sexy or revealing, but I dont want a conservative look either. Also, please suggest what footwear would match the outfit.
Ms. M
Wear a dress in soft material or a lace dress. Match this with fabric shoes or sandals like your dress.
