Thinking Filipiniana

Toni Galang, chose beauty queens, top models and basketball heartthrobs when he celebrated his 25th year in the business with a fashion show and a medical mission – something good to the eyes, and something good for the heart.
The fashion show, held at the Manansala Ballroom of Holiday Inn, was a feast for the eyes. Colorful handpainted ternos and barongs made everyone think Filipiniana for the next occasion. Exquisite pieces for proms, debuts and weddings brought nostalgia to those who have gone through all these memorable events. With music provided by the Philippine Pop Orchestra, masterfully conducted by Gerry Samonte, and special dance numbers by the St. Emilene Cultural Dance Troupe led by Norma Pakingan, the mood was a romantic rendezvous with the Philippine town fiesta, which has been Galang’s inspiration for his creations.
Galang’s works, which are part of the Terno Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum, were worn on the ramp by modeling mavens and beauty queens led by Marina Benipayo, Patty Betita, Marilen Espino, Desiree Verdadero with 12-year old daughter Andrea Verdadero-Abesamis, Sarah Jane Paez with kids Sarina and Max Paez-Santiago, Ann Torres, Lou Bunyi, Jo Anne Alivio, Michelle Maloney, Gladys Dueñas, Yvonne Gonzalez, Princess Gairanod, among others and basketball heartthrobs Romel Adducul, Gerard Jones, James Razon and Marx Topacio plus volleyball player Ariel Atendido.
Seen in the audience were fashion guru Ben Farrales, Aureo Alonzo, Nollie Hans, Barge Ramos, Rodel Arre, Steve de Leon, brothers Rheez Chua and Jing Chua of Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines.
Two days after, with the help of Cebu Pacific, who made an additional flight schedule for the team, and Viva Mineral Water and Cosmos Bottling Company, Toni Galang and 140 members of the Medical Mission Foundation of Michigan, were already at the Boracay Islands Municipal Hospital where a donation of half a million dollars worth of medical equipment and supplies was made to the people of Malay, Aklan. More than 2,000 outpatients were attended to by the doctors, nurses, and auxiliary members of the MMF headed by MMF chairperson Dr. Jacqueline Lougheed, together with founding chair Dr. Fanny Dela Cruz, over-all committee head Lourdes Lim and the nurses’ team of Daisy Diaz, Roy Lim and Rey Marzan. Four hundred dental and 500 major and minor surgical cases were treated. Around 200 eye problems were also given remedy.
After the Municipal Hospital, the group went to Balabag Elementary School where medical attention was given to 1,300 children. Next came a fire drill, a talk on anti-terrorism and security against child abuse given by Stanley Richard of the Chicago Police Department.
