Sotheby’s colored diamonds: Going, going, going today

Sotheby’s auction of magnificent jewels and jadeite comprises over 350 lots of precious gems, unique designs and sought-after jadeite jewels. The auction, estimated to fetch about HK$200 million, will take place at Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong today, October 31.

An exquisite selection of colored diamonds is offered on sale. Among all colors, red diamond is often regarded as the cream of the crop. A fancy purplish red diamond ring offered in this auction will appeal to the most discerning cognoscenti of diamonds. The base color of this 0.76 carat red diamond provides brilliant flashes of the hue with the rarest of fancy diamond – red, mixed with vibrant flashes of purple. Unlike yellow or blue, the red hue in diamond is not caused by the presence of any trace elements, but is a kind of deformation in its atomic lattice. Till now, exact details and cause of deformation are still a mystery to gemologists. This very rare gem is estimated to fetch HK$1.9 million to HK$2 million.

Aside from blue diamonds and other rare pieces, there are diamond rings and pendants in emerald cut, marquise cut, princess cut, Asher cut (the predecessor of emerald cut) and in heart shapes and pear shapes.

Jadeite is often regarded as the mysterious gem of the Orient. It is judged by its saturation and evenness of color, its translucency and size. In the sale is a magnificent jadeite bead necklace strung with 29 highly translucent brilliant emerald green large jadeite beads of exceptional texture. There is a lot of wastage in carving jadeite beads and thus a jadeite bead necklace with even colors is a rare find.

Dash with a modern touch, there is also a single strand jadeite bead necklace accented with two thick jadeite hoops and a diamond spacer estimated at HK$5 million to HK$6 million.

There is also a wide selection of signed pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany’s, Buccellati, Cartier, Bulgari and Graff.
