You’re lookin’ hot!

FROM COFFEE TO COCKTAILS - Celine Lopez -
Summer is the time to let go of the paint-by-numbers makeup and I.M Pei inspired hairdos and literally let loose. However, if there is something you should be more stringent with in terms of skin care, it is protecting skin from the harsh rays of the sun with the proper products and hydrating it to the hilt (this is no time to be stingy) . So here’s a little cheat sheet in summer survival, whether it’s tanning along the sandy shores of the Pacific Ocean or just living it up in the urban jungle.
Beauty And The Beach
Skinsavers:

1. With the sun, sand and highly irritating salt water on the beach, your skin is more susceptible to getting all sorts of irritations and most of all getting burnt to a crisp. So it’s important to use products that not only protect but soothe as well. Look for ingredients that cool the skin, like extracts of menthol, eucalyptus and cypress. L’Oreal’s Hydrafresh Foaming Cleanser is ideal for such sultry weather. It contains the ingredients that cool the skin and comes in gel form, so it helps in rebalancing the skin and keeps it from getting too oily.

2.
On the beach, cooling the skin off is a breeze with a toner that does not only strip off oil but keeps it at bay as well. L’Oreal has just the perfect concoction to do just that. Its Hydrafresh oil-controlling toner helps banish the shinies as it refreshes your sun-parched skin.

Making Faces:

1.
So picked up someone while you were tanning at the beach and now you have a five o’ clock margarita date? Well, dazzle him with your sparkling charm and matching sparkling eyes. Maybelline’s Cool Effect Eye Cream (shown in all of its different colors) is a light creme-gel eyesparkle that adds a subtle shimmer. You can even use it as a highlighter to add a glow to your tan.

2.
There’s nothing worse than makeup meltdown! So bring along a tube of liquid lippie instead of solid tubes. They are easier to tote around and rest assured-they are far neater than lipsticks – at least for the beach. A popular choice among the fight beach bunnies are Lancome’ s Juicy Tubes that give you a very Liz Hurley lipshine and have a light yummy flavor. Think of them as sophisticated lipsmackers!

Hair Scare:

1.
Wear a hat or head wrap whenever possible. It’s very chic really, very Diana Vreeland in fact. I used a parasol and everyone thought I was crazy on the beach, but who cares! My hair means more to me to me than my reputation.

2.
While baking, color-treated or not, be sure to use a leave-in conditioner to prevent color fade, dehydration and brassiness. The heat of the sun acts as an instant source of heat, giving you a hair treatment at the same time! Talk about being pro-active! L’Oreal’s most popular line Kerastase has an excellent hair mask called Masquintense, with formulas for thick or thin hair. I’ve also seen hair wizard Henri Calayag use it as a styling aid to smooth hair without getting it greasy.

3.
After swimming in saltwater or pool water, try rinsing hair with some clean bottled club soda water. It prevents hair from becoming a salt farm or a green pasture (due to the color altering affects of chlorine). Also the longer salt or chlorine stays in the hair, the more damage and dehydration it can cause to sun-baked locks. After all the playa playing, it’s important to use a quality shampoo like Kerastase shampoo for dry and damaged hair. It’s instant gratification for battered locks after being KSP on the beach all day!
Cityheat
Skinsavers:

1. In summer you are often dealing with oilier skin because heat tends to stimulate your sebaceous glands, which produce more oil. Add to that sweating, dust and pollution and suddenly your pores are larger. It’s important to keep pores clean. Wash your face with a good cleanser such as L‘Oreal Skin Refiner Pore Minimizing Facial Wash.

2.
At night, exfoliate skin with a mild, deep-cleansing scrub to get rid of dead skin and to help unblock pores. Try Lancome’sExfoliance Clarite for some easy and refreshing scrubbing.

3.
Now it’s time to be shy... with the sun that is! After cleansing, follow up with a light moisturizer that contains a pretty high SPF such as L‘Oreal‘s UV Perfect with an SPF of 40.

Making Faces:

1.
Summer is all about showing some skin and it’s also about lightening up! So forget those thick and gooey geisha foundations! Instead use a long-lasting liquid foundation that promises to endure the harsh climate. One to try is Maybelline’s Pure Stay liquid foundation that lasts for eight hours. If shine is still a problem, then Maybelline also has an excellent dual purpose powder foundation that keeps shine at bay while giving you protection from the sun (it has SPF 15). It lasts and lasts so you don’t have to keep on touching up.

2.
Summer is not the time to bruise your bum on your boudoir stool. If you can’t get yourself looking as hot as the weather in 10 minutes or less, then there is something wrong with your routine! Check out the speed accelerating beauty buys that will get you Oscar-ready in no time. For that sun-kissed look in a jiff, try using Maybelline’s Pure Blush (shown below in apricot). It’s ideal for city wear since it comes in powder form (no streaks and slick spills) and comes in a convenient dome shape that allows you to apply it without a brush! Lancome’s lip dimension glosses also keep lips looking fab without the scary makeup smear campaign. Despite its liquid formula, it really stays put!

Hair Scare:

1.
If it’s not possible to go around wearing a turban or hat 24/7 around the city, then your best bet is a good leave-in conditioner (try: L‘Oreal’s Nutri-Liss leave in hair conditioner). The sun’s heat will activate the conditioner, soften your hair and also protect hair while it’s being blowdried!

2.
The humidity of city living ain’t friendly to hair that seems to have a life of its own. The L’Oreal Liss Extreme line (with shampoo, hair mask and smoothing leave-on conditioner) acts as hair valium as it relaxes frizzy hair. A must for all scorched city dwellers.

3.
As a final step for damage control, if your hair seems dull, condition after shampooing, then rinse it with a mixture of vinegar and water. Finally, schedule trims for the beginning and end of the summer season to rid your hair of dry, older ends and keep your cut in shape.
