Music and More: Fashion fight at the MTV Asia Music Awards
February 7, 2002 | 12:00am
Ever since "Video killed the radio star" video aired to US cable subscribers 22 years ago the face of music, well, got a face-lift. Music became more than just a beat. It set the tone for a generation.
Ever since Uma Thurman wore the lilac Prada dress at the 1991 Oscars, awards nights were never the same again. Music fans and movie fans inadvertently became fashion fans as well. It was more than just a talent fist fight. Awards shows also became the ultimate fashion show. It was the estrogen superbowl (gay guys included)!
The MTV Asian Music Awards held in Singapore last weekend was a fight in all aspects. It was a dizzying sight to see the most luminous faces in the Asian and international music scene. I was just an elbow nudge away from the likes of Enrique Iglesias, Pink, Zhang Zhi Yi and Westlife. Mandy Moore and Ronan Keating were the hosts of the nights festivities. Donatella Versace (who by the way looks like a cigar) was also there shocking the recession-hit Asians with her Armageddon-sized diamond ring. The audience was entertained by the musical performances of Pink and Bond, our very own Regine Velasquez sang a duet with Mandy Moore and more. There was a special performance by some of the performers from Cirque du Soleil.
It was a night where all the countries within the MTV Asia cusp joined and reveled at this joyous music revolution. Eleven favorite music artist awards from the different Asian territories were awarded, as well as six international music category awards, one fashion category award and one film award. Gary V. and Donita Rose presented while Regine Velaquez won the Favorite Artist for the Philippines.
Of course, after all the sirens have sung and all the hunks have serenaded their fans, it was time to scrutinize the fashion fodder that made that night something to behold. Ready... set, fight!
