MANILA, Philippines — For a lot of Filipinos, education is considered the solution to many problems such as poverty and career stagnation.
The journey of Ryan Sta. Maria-Everist is a lot like the journeys of so many Juans and Juanas. But in other ways, his unique triumph has led to the birth of one of the fastest rising education and visa services agencies in Australia and in the Philippines: Las Islas Filipinas Education Services.
Starting from scratch
As a young boy, Everist was raised by different relatives because his mother had him as a teenager. He also did not have a lot of close friends because he would go from one place to another.
On top of these, he found it difficult to get quality education given his financial situation. While his luck turned around when an Australian philanthropist funded his college education, he soon struggled with depression as he went to Australia to pursue further studies. The struggles he faced, however, made him stronger and more determined to succeed.
Having started with nothing to his name, he took every opportunity to improve as a person and as a professional. Pulling from his own experiences and aspirations, he decided to set up his own company so that he can better help his fellow Filipinos attain their dreams in Australia, to experience the same blessings he was given.
This led to the official launching Las Islas Filipinas Education Services in 2022. While it has not been easy, Everist’s grit has translated to tremendous growth of Las Islas Filipinas in such a short amount of time.
Las Islas provides five core services. First is the provision of free and accurate information on available courses and institutions, along with any other relevant details about their studies in Australia.
Second is the provision of assistance to students with all essential paperwork that covers admissions and visa processing, plus travel and accommodation. Third, Las Islas offers education training based on the student’s unique interests and background.
Fourth is the establishment of partnerships with international education institutes to share information and benefits among agents. Lastly, Las Islas offers seminars, conferences and workshops to promote Australian education and career opportunities to the international market.
Together with his team, he has helped many Filipinos get into world-class educational institutions in Australia through accurate visa guidance and committed, people-centered service. And as a firm believer of giving back, Everist has also led community development projects through the non-profit arm of Las Islas: Las Islas Filipinas Charities.
Gaining recognition
The unparalleled dedication of Las Islas Filipinas has unsurprisingly garnered much recognition locally and abroad.
Las Islas is a semi-finalist for the Ethical Business Award and a Nominee for four other awards at the prestigious 7News Young Achievers Awards 2023 namely: Strategic Alliance Network Award; Real Estate Leadership Award; HR Gurus Career Achievement Award; and The Soward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award in Australia because of its commitment to providing world-class educational opportunities to Filipino youth.
Las Islas was also nominated for Awards Australia’s 2023 Community Achievement Awards for Victoria, namely: Regional Development Victoria Leadership and Innovation Award; Coolabah Turf Connecting Communities Award; and the Regional Development Victoria Business Achievement Award.
Everist has also received his fair share of accolades as the CEO and Founder of Las Islas Filipinas.
He is a 2023 Outstanding LGBTQI in Southern Leyte for Business and Entrepreneurship. For this, he received a Plaque of Awards in recognition of his exemplary leadership, dedication, excellence in advocating and empowering the LGBT community.
In 2023, he was awarded by Gintong Parangal the “Jury Award for Most Outstanding in the Field of Education and Empowered, Exceptional Humanitarian Hero of the Year.”
For the Thailand International Leadership Awards, he was named the “Asia’s Young Man of Excellence in the Field of Entrepreneurship, Exceptional Humanitarian Advocate for Inclusive Education, Remarkable Ethical Business, and Sustainable Community Development Award of the Year.”
Asia’s Humanitarian Hero Awards also bestowed upon him “Asia’s Most Dynamic, Ethical Business Leader in the Field of Education, and Exceptional Humanitarian for Sustainable Community Development of the Year.”
Blazing a trail
It is not easy being in an education and visa services agency as it is responsible for the prompt and accurate processing of visa applications for many aspiring students and professionals.
Las Islas has had to contend with many competitors in the education industry, changing visa policies in Australia, and establishing and managing professional relationships with clients.
