Sky subscribers meet ‘Jane the Virgin’ star in exclusive event
MANILA, Philippines - Three lucky SkyCable and Destiny Cable subscribers were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and chat with the star of Jane the Virgin, Gina Rodriguez, on Nov. 27 at the Long Bar, Raffles Makati. An exclusive event hosted by Sony Channel and Sky, the meet-and-greet gave Gina the chance to bond with her fans and select media representatives from the Philippines.
Jane the Virgin offers a fresh take on being a Latina in America. Fans and critics alike rave about how Jane breaks Latina stereotypes prevalent in shows currently being aired. Also praised is its very nuanced approach to the theme of being religious in the world today without being blatantly preachy.
Based on Juana La Virgen, it takes its telenovela story roots — about a virgin who got pregnant because of an accidental artificial insemination — and gives it dramatic, romantic, and even comedic flair.
The subscribers in the meet and greet were winners of SkyCable and Destiny Cable’s online contest. Hosted on SkyCable and Destiny Cable’s official Facebook pages, the contest invited subscribers to answer a question related to the show. Slots for the meet-and-greet event were then raffled off among the entries. One of the winners, Melody Carolino, said that members of her “entire family are fans of the show” and that they watch and bond over it every week. For Marivic Recosana, Jane the Virgin is great since she “loves the twists and turns of the story.” Osbert Villasis, on the other hand, was very excited about his “first opportunity to meet and greet a Hollywood actress.”
