Philippines’ Metro Turf Racetrack project wins GE merit award
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ Metro Turf Racetrack Lighting Project was recognized with a Merit Award in the 2013 GE Edison Award Asia Preliminaries in a ceremony held last June 10 in Guangzhou, China.
The GE Edison Awards was launched in 1983 with the aim of providing recognition to lighting professionals worldwide for their outstanding designs and high-quality lighting projects. Preliminaries were held across Asia-Pacific this year to encourage regional participation in this prestigious global competition.
“GE Lighting Philippines is very proud and honored to have our entry selected from among those submitted by 15 countries across Asia. We are excited to bring the Philippines’ lighting project to the global arena where we will join countries worldwide for the Global 2013 Edison Award Competition,†said Vicente Adorable, GE Lighting Philippines country manager. “This is a result of a great collaboration among the lighting designer, contractor, and GE Lighting Philippines, together with one of its distributor-partners, KC Industrial.â€
The Metro Turf Racetrack project is a 45-hectare development in Malvar, Batangas, featuring a modern race facility that includes a 1,525-meter-long racetrack surrounded by a total of 46 light posts, 39 of which encircle the oval while the rest are attached to the grandstand. Shanghai-based lighting designer and application engineer Li Lim adopted GE 1500 Powerspot, which met the required lux level of 500 lux on tracks and 1200 lux at the finish line, thus ensuring outstanding illumination during races, especially at night when an excellent and reliable lighting condition is mandatory to accurately capture the race action, including important racing statistics and results.
This project was highlighted by utilizing lesser lighting fixtures resulting to lower energy consumption and more savings for Metro Turf during its operations. Li Lim also employed thoughtful considerations in terms of positioning, conformity and functionality of the design to maximize lighting efficiency and effectiveness.
“Metro Turf as a highly functional lighting project featuring a design that is very considerate and also sharply in accordance with high-quality lighting standards, making it a fine example of its kind. In various points, we can see the designer’s significant considerations such as the lighting positioning opposite the platform and along the finish line,†explained Ditas Alipao, GE Lighting Philippines country product manager.
The judging criteria of the Asia Pacific preliminary competition were identical to the global GE Edison Awards, with a key consideration being the significant use of GE light sources (lamps and/or LEDs). The winning entry is selected for its superiority in the following categories: functional excellence, architectural compatibility, effective use of state-of-the-art lighting products and techniques, appropriate color, form and texture revelation, energy effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
