MMLDC wins in Zero Basura Olympics
MANILA, Philippines - With environmental stewardship as one of its major advocacies, the Meralco Development Center (MMLDC) bagged the “Grandmaster” title and was hailed as “Champion in Reduction” in the recently concluded Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO). The prestigious competition bestowed its highest honor to MMLDC for its “excellent Earth-friendly operations and practices.”
“We are very honored that we were cited for our contributions to Mother Earth,” said Agnes Fidelino, MMLDC managing director. “MMLDC will further boost projects that promote the welfare of our planet, and espouse active environmentalism for our clients, partners and constituents.”
Environmentalism isn’t just an advocacy, it’s a way of life. The Center, which is located in Antipolo, runs an electric-jeep that shuttles people around. It is a pollution-free vehicle and MMLDC has been a zero-waste facility since 2000. The Center has implemented waste segregation, recycling and resource conservation, and posters and signs are prominently displayed and distributed throughout the facilities. MMLDC’s Academic Hall, in particular, has banners that openly promote these green strategies.
In the ZBO, MMLDC showcased its good practices in waste management. There are five categories: waste segregation, reduction, re-use/recycling, composting, and green technology for residual waste, and MMLDC participated in four of them.
The award was given during the culminating ZBO awards ceremony on Earth Day. Sharing the Grandmaster title with MMLDC is Unilever, another company that espouses environmentally friendly practices. Some of the organizations that were also recognized in this event included Smart, Coca Cola, Ayala Land, Quezon Power, Manila Doctors Hospital, Bayer Philippines, Team Energy, Cravings Group of Companies, to name a few.
The ZBO is a venue for showcasing how businesses manage waste by applying innovative and practical solid waste management practices. It is organized by Philippine Business for Social Progress, Philippine Business for the Environment, and Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc., with the support of the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc. and the Association of Safety Practitioners of the Philippines, Inc. The event was created to support the implementation of ESWM Act 2000, a comprehensive law that creates mechanisms and incentives to address the countryís garbage problem.
