Malicious gossip in the workplace
Dear Nanay,
I resigned from my work and encountered a problem with my clearance for getting my separation pay from the company due to some lost receipts. Since I needed the money and recovering the receipts was hopeless, I allowed my employer to deduct the amount from my separation pay. I am now working with another company, but am having a nightmare. I learned that one of the employees is spreading malicious gossip that my former employer terminated me due to estafa. It spread like wildfire and everybody was feasting on the issue. I want to talk to that person but I am afraid I might do something I might regret later. I might lose my temper. People have begun to ignore and evade me. Nobody wants to talk to me, either. I want to resign from work because this incident keeps haunting me. Please help me, Nanay, I feel desperate.

Why is it that everyone likes to gossip? Bakit lahat ng tao tsismoso? It must be human nature. But when it causes emotional stress and damage to other people, then I really think the rumormongers should stop.
However, many times that is not within our control. So if I were you, the best thing you can do is to prove them wrong! Ignore the gossip! Show your boss and everyone else that you are efficient, diligent, hardworking and, most of all, trustworthy. Make yourself an asset to the company.
Be nice to everyone. Kailangan kaibigan mo lahat ng tao. (You should be friends with everybody.) I think you are right in not confronting the person who started the rumors if you feel you might do something you will regret later on. Mahirap na. Baka may masabi ka o may magawa ka pa. (It’s hard. You might say or do something.)
Use this incident as your inspiration to do your very best in your job. And when your boss sees your performance and everybody is your friend, your actions will speak louder than words. They will eventually realize by themselves that there is no possible way there is any truth to the estafa rumors.

Is National Book Store Open To Indie Authors?
Dear Nanay,
If I write and self-publish a book (let’s say it is good and marketable), is there any possibility that an independent author like me would get a chance to sell my books to National Book Store? Is NBS open to entrepreneur-writers who publish their book only 100 copies at a time? Thank you very much.

I still regularly receive e-mails and letters from people who want to have their manuscripts published or are asking for information on how to get published. But your situation is a little different because you want to self-publish your respective books. The short answer to your questions is “yes.” National Book Store is always open to looking at new titles for inclusion in the store. It doesn’t matter who you are and you don’t have to have a “brand name.”
