Publisher Clang Garcia reveals her true colors

SINGLES@WORK - Aurora Diaz-Wilson -
Clang Garcia almost cried after winning this year’s Department of Tourism’s Kalakbay Award for Best Local Travel Publication.

(Clang reveals that as a baby, she would cry very often and the only way to stop her was for her grandma to sing "Clang, clang, clang." Thus, the word became her name.)

With the award, Clang’s efforts to publish a quality travel guide were duly recognized. Updated quarterly, 50,000 copies of Colors magazine are distributed at the arrival area of airport terminals 1 and 2 as a free gift to foreign travelers in order to assist them in exploring the best of the Philippines.

Passengers on Manila-bound Northwest Airlines planes get copies. The magazine is also available to the expatriate community and local travel enthusiasts through subscription.

Artistic photographs of cascading waterfalls, town fiestas and scenic spots around the Philippines capture the beauty of our country. Almost single-handedly, Clang, 30, has managed to publish this delightful magazine brimming with photos and information about the local culture.

A graduate of Bachelor of Arts from St. Scholastica’s College, our bachelorette reflects on playing as a child and being immersed in rose petals.

Which living person do you admire most?

I will always say it is Sister Mary John Mananzan. At the time I was in St. Scholastica’s, she was the dean of college and chairperson of Gabriela, a very active women’s rights group. If you meet her you would be very surprised. She is so liberated for a nun. She brought me new ideas. I realized that I play a vital role in the society wherein in my own way, I can make a difference, know my rights and stand up for them.

Who or what is the greatest love of your life?

My career. One of my top priorities is to be able to do something worthwhile. This will keep me single for the rest of my life and will probably scare men away.

What is your passion?

I realized that when I did Colors, it inspired the passion within me to make a difference for my country. There is a deeper commitment more than monetary values.

What is your most fervent wish?

To be able to give life to my dream… that is Colors already. I had a very intense feeling when I conceptualized it. With such a beautiful country, how come we didn’t have a quality travel publication solely dedicated in featuring the best of the Philippines?

How do you resolve your conflicts?

If it is work-related, I try to breathe in at least 20 times before I open my mouth.

What film influenced your life?

Mulan
. That Disney character was able to break the traditional image of women in cartoons. She was the non-traditional female in fairy tales who saved her people.

What is your greatest fear?

To grow old or die early without fulfilling my dreams.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

When they decide on something without thinking about it thoroughly.

What is your current state of mind?

To meet my deadline.

If you had the chance to change something in your life, what would that be?

To play and play during my childhood. My parents separated when I was young so I had to take care of my siblings. I was forced to mature at an early age.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Clothes and shoes. Also my investment in Colors. In the beginning I ran it without any sponsors.

What is the first thing you look for when you meet a woman?

Maganda ba ang damit niya?
The spirit and attitude that she radiates.

Which historical character would you like to have been?

Gabriela Silang with her courage and determination to fight for the good of the majority.

Name a moment that brings back happy memories.

I was out on a trip with a very big group of friends in Batangas amidst a breathtaking seascape view. We were laughing and laughing the whole time.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

To be able to prove that I can support myself. When I started Colors, I had no monetary support. I learned that one’s capital is more of the relationship with the people in the industry. The people know that they can trust my word.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being in a spa and pampering myself, being immersed in rose petals.

Which famous quotation would you have wanted to be the author of?

"If you have nothing good to say, just shut your mouth."

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

When things do not fall into place the way you wish they would.

What did your mom often say to you?
