MANILA, Philippines — To further reinforce its commitment to sustainability and clothing circularity, Uniqlo launched an embroidery service at its Re. Uniqlo Studio at the Manila Flagship Store in Glorietta 5, Makati.

This also marks the first anniversary of the studio, which mostly offered simple, practical on-site repairs during its start.

With this latest service, the global apparel retailer allows you to adorn your favorite LifeWear items with a personal touch, as you can customize your style with more than 80 design selections that complement text and fonts. The embroidery options include pets, flowers, food, seasonal themes, and can also be used to cover up small to medium holes, extending the life of your LifeWear pieces.

The Japanese label is tying up with sustainable fashion community, Basically Borrowed, for a fashion swap party, where customers can bring in old and unused LifeWear pieces that they can exchange with other participants.

Basically Borrowed’s mission is “to create an infinite closet for everyone by re-circulating fashion as efficiently as possible,” said Jessie Jiang, who pushes for mainstreaming sustainable fashion. “Re.Uniqlo’s initiatives are commendable. It’s inspiring to see a brand so dedicated to making a positive impact on both the environment and our communities.”

Reichelle Vergara, the head of PR and Sustainability, further explained the initiative: “A lot of us, I think, will enjoy this embroidery service. I know I did. I enjoyed putting embroidery designs in my polo today. This is part of our overall Re.Uniqlo initiative. I want to also share with you and introduce the three main pillars of our Re.Uniqlo.

“First of all, it's Reuse. We are proud of the quality of our Re.Uniqlo items. As you know, our Re.Uniqlo items really last long.

“And a lot of you brought Re. Uuniqlo items and they're all in mint condition till now. So, we really want also that type of personality or characteristic of our clothes to be worn also by, you know, those communities that really need it. So, in all our stores, actually, you'll find a Re.Uniqlo box.

“And you can donate, actually, if there are items that maybe it's not already your style or your size. Instead of throwing it away, you know, put it in our Re.Uniqlo box and really put it into good use. So, if there are calamities, people who really don't get to go to a mall or don't even know what Re.Uniqlo is, we reach out to them and we give these clothes to them.

“Next is we have the Repair. This is the core purpose of our Re.Uniqlo Studio. When we have items that we love and we wear them over and over again, you know, of course, it's subject to wear and tear. But we have a solution.

“We have our Repair Studio where you can give it a try. If there's maybe holes, we can try to patch it up. Maybe just, you know, with buttons. If you're losing some buttons, then we can help you fix that one. Aside from that, we have the embroidery service. So, it's one way also of upcycling those items that you really love and giving it a new life.

“And the last is our Recycle. There are really times when, of course, the clothing has already lasted its lifespan. And those items, we actually recycle those and make it into new clothing. We also have collections that are made of recycled materials. These are small steps in making a positive change in the world. So, we would like to invite you to continue to become sustainable. I think we are all here for a purpose and to help us with these initiatives as well.”

Re.Uniqlo Studio accepts both old and new LifeWear items for embroidery. Aside from tops, bottoms, and even bags, check out the full list of eligible pieces at the counter at the flagship store. The price per icon/design is fixed at P250, while the text varies according to the size of the item and character length. Small and medium sizes with three to five letters are at Php 200, six to 10 letters at Php 250, and large size (up to 3) also at P250.
