“Romancing the Water” is an art exhibit that pays full respect to the medium of watercolor and local artists. With fresh work and committed hands, the show was first conceived during the L’Arc En Ciel group show in 2019 by myself, as curator of the project. A year later, the idea to display the passion of local watercolor work in a group show, “Romancing the Water,” was born. True to their passion and love of the medium, the three watercolor artists for the first show — Alfred T. Galura, Gerardo B. Jimenez and Rene V. Canlas — managed to launch a well-received art exhibit, despite the epic challenges wrought by the pandemic, in August 2020.
Now, once again, these three artists return to showcase their latest works in “Romancing the Water: Episode ll” to be launched Aug. 6.
Alfred Galura is a multi-awarded watercolorist who has been affiliated with L’Arc En Ciel Atelier for 10 years now. This humble Pampanga artist has had many solo and group shows at Ayala Musuem, 8 Rockwell, The Bellevue Manila, and Tagaytay Highlands and recently won a 2nd place prize at the Korean Art Biennale. He is a master in capturing the intricacy of lacework (I can’t imagine how he manages to do this).
Born in Tondo, Rene Canlas has participated in many shows, including his first one-man exhibit “Re-Vision” at the Ayala ArtistSpace in Greenbelt Makati in 2018, and won the 1st Kulay Sa Tubig Art Competition 2019 prize for his entry piece, “Engkargado,” followed by an award-winning entry (“Standstill”) in the 33rd Kulay sa Tubig in 2021.
Gerardo Jimenez is a gardener, a national athlete (in fencing) as well as an artist, and has participated in several group exhibits for the International Watercolor Society-Philippines (he won a 3rd place prize at the On the Spot Contest held in 2018). Also in 2018, he exhibited his sold-out solo show “Fleeting: Restaurantscapes” at Prism Gallery in Makati. His work has also been included in the Fabriano in Acquarello, the world’s largest watercolor event held in Fabriano, Italy.
Watercolor is, indeed, the most difficult medium for artists to master. We welcome the public to witness and experience the mastery of these three artists in a display of works capturing different genres and subjects. The show will be held at the Main Gallery of Altromondo - Contemporanea Art Space.
Opening reception and cocktails are set for Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. for guests. The exhibit will run until Sept. 3. at Altro Mondo Creative Space, 1159 Chino Roces, San Antonio Village, Makati City.
