WATCH: How to make Oriental art collage

Deni Rose M. Afinidad-Bernardo - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Though a relatively unknown art, Oriental art collage has many applications and can therefore become a profitable career for many artists, said practitioner and freelance art educator and artist Ian de Jesus.

According to De Jesus, as opposed to a multimedia collage wherein one puts together different things through cut and paste, in Oriental art collage, one just draws different patterns and elements together like in a collage. It has been called “Oriental,” said De Jesus, because the art usually incorporates Oriental motifs and historical references such as archaeological findings.

Sharing one of my favorite illustrations last year Inktober Day 02 "Bakunawa" Sometimes a deity that was represented as a serpentine dragon, according to Filipino mythology. He has two sets of wings, whiskers, a red tongue, and a mouth ‘the size of a lake.’ The Filipinos once thought that the Bakunawa lived in the sea at a time when the world had seven moons that the serpents, being fascinated by their light, would rise out of the sea into the sky and consume the moons. Thus, the serpents were the cause of lunar eclipses. To prevent the world from becoming dark the people would run out of their homes, taking their pots and pans, to make the most noise they could in order to scare the Bakunawa so they would stop eating the moons, and give them the moonlight back. But in some versions, these serpents also devour the sun in which case also cause the solar eclipse. For this back-to-school season, De Jesus invites people to try Oriental art collage as it can be used not only in making school projects, but also in professional creative industries like visual merchandising and fashion design.

De Jesus was among the artists featured in the recent SM Stationery Art Fest, which included workshops from other artists representing brands such as Pilot Pens, Faber-Castell, Sakura, Dong-A,Ifex, Frixion Pastel, Tokyo Finds, and Elmers. For the back-to-school season, these brands offer innovations such as eco-friendly and recyclable coloring tools, gel ink paintbrush pentel pens, calligraphy art sets, and highlighters with eraser.

In celebration of Lego’s 60 years of bricks, the Creative Carnival concept was made and runs until May 31. Kids can build their own car at the City Station and test it on the ramp. Mini doll “Stephanie” invites kids to decorate her newly baked cupcakes at the Friends station. Kids can learn more about the brand’s history at the 60 Years station.
