‘Continuum’ at ArtistSpace, Ayala Museum

MANILA, Philippines - Forty of the country’s top artists weigh in on the issues of the past year with works that ruminate upon social events as they collide in the intersections of past, present and future in “Continuum,” which is on view until Jan. 5, 2015 at ArtistSpace, Ayala Museum, Dela Rosa St., Makati City.

Some of the participating artists are Xander Calceta, Thomas Daquioag, Buen Abrigo, Michael Cacnio, Siefred Guilaran, Jun Balasbas, Franklin Cua, Clarence Chun, Marcel Antonio, Janet Balbarona, Marco Banares, Gerrico Blanco, Buen Calubayan, Franklin Cana, Jonathan Ching, Salvador Ching, Franchesca Co, Iya Consorio, Joe Datuin, Daniel dela Cruz, Jaime Gubaton, Maya Ladyong, Domenico Lopez, Dino Lopez, Kelli Maeshiro, Jessie Mondares, Francis Nacio, Tiny Nuyda, Ramon Orlina, Jaime Pacena II, Butch Payawal, Omi Reyes, Arturo Sanchez, Robert Sanchez, Eddie Santillan, Aner Sebastian, Hamilton Sulit, JR Urao and Camille Ver.

While some responded to “Continuum’s” challenge by drawing from the rich arsenal of Philippine social realism, others touch upon the plight of the Filipino working class, while the rest took the metaphorical route in their works, choosing instead to highlight themes in non-literal terms.

Presented by Gallery Big, “Continuum” is an ambitious project envisioned as an annual exhibition with a social realist bent, a celebration of a Filipino art practice endanged by current market proclivities for the global and contemporary. This first edition manages to take a few humble but meaningful steps towards that grand vision.
