Commuters urged to post 'safies' with taxi driver
MANILA, Philippines - Commuters are encouraged to take their "selfies" with taxi drivers for safety purposes.
Youth group Y&R urged commuters to post pictures with taxi drivers on social networking sites immediately after boarding with the hashtag #safie and the taxi's license plate number.
Using the hashtag would help identify abusive taxi drivers, as well as to share good experiences of commuting, Y&R Philippines Executive Creative Director Herbert Hernandez said.
The youth group is working with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to promote the "safie" campaign.
The word "safie" is a combination of the words "safe" and "selfie."
PNP spokesperson Gen. Wilben Mayor said that posting selfies online would assist the police force in investigating and identifying erring drivers.
On the other hand, transport group Drivers Unite for Mass Progress, Equality and Reality disagree with the proposal, noting that the campaign could violate the rights of taxi drivers and might be used for wrong intentions.
The Land Transportation and Regulatory Board recently ordered taxi operators o submit a list of all their authorized taxi drivers as part of their campaign to ensure the riding public's safety.
