Galerie Joaquin presents Sanso and Camille Ver double exhibit
MANILA, Philippines - Two simultaneous exhibitions will open to cap the year at at Galerie Joaquin. Running from Nov. 20 to Dec. 2, “Sanso: Black and White” and “Building Light: Camille Ver” feature works by two important artists — one a leading figure in the history of Philippine art and the other a rising star in the contemporary art scene.
“Sanso: Black and White” is a landmark exhibition that zeroes-in on significant black and white works from the oeuvre of Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee Juvenal Sanso. Sanso’s black and white works are perhaps the purest manifestation of his Expressionist sensibilities. Although faced with the Herculean task of working with a sparseness of colors, the works still provide enough information for the viewer to recreate and interpret reality with their own imagination. Such is the skill that defines Sanso as one of the truly great Modernist artists of today.
Camille Ver’s “Building Light,” on the other hand, is a collaborative exhibition with Locsin Furnitures & Lighting. Ver tackles the notion of urbanity, cityscapes, and lightin an exhibition that combines painting with furniture installations — particularly using Ver’s abstract practice on lamp and chair designs. One of the art scene’s rising young abstractionists, Camille Ver is a graduate of the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. As opposed to the common usage of controlled minimalism in abstraction, Ver prefers to use large swaths of brushworks and experiments extensively with color and depth in her practice. Her transitions between inorganic to organic subjects is emphasized by her forceful use of expressive strokesthat are tempered by the tec-pen lines.
