Important works by renowned Filipino artists to be auctioned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong
MANILA, Philippines - Sotheby’s Hong Kong presents over 200 lots of Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art estimated at HK$88 million/US$11 million in the “Modern and Contemporary Asian Art – Evening Sale and Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings Day Sale” on Oct. 5 and 6 respectively during the Autumn 2014 Sale Series.
The two events bring to the market a diversified selection of works by acclaimed modern and contemporary Filipino artists that showcase the creativity and talents of these artists to a global audience.
Mok Kim Chuan, head of Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings department at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, said, “Filipino art has been gaining a strong foothold at Sotheby’s Southeast Asian Art sales in the past seasons due to heightening interests from both regional and global collectors. In response to the ever-increasing demand, Sotheby’s is thrilled to bring to the market this season an exceptional selection of works by iconic Filipino artists.”
Among them is a rare, fresh-to-the-market painting, “Paghuhuli Ng Mga Manok” (Catching Chickens) by Anita Magsaysay-Ho; it is one of the artist’s largest works ever to appear at auction. On the contemporary front, Sotheby’s will offer a noteworthy large-format, surrealistic work by contemporary artist Ronald Ventura. Including distinctive modern and contemporary pieces by Fernando Cueto Amorsolo, Alfredo Esquillo, Jr., Andres Barrioquinto, Lao Lianben, Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, Jose Joya and Cesar Legaspi, the dynamic lineup of works highlights the evolution of Philippine modern and contemporary art and is set to inspire enthusiasm among discerning collectors.
