MANILA, Philippines - Multi-awarded artist Michelline Syjuco unveils her new collection of art-to-wear in “Theater of the Mind,†which opens on Feb. 13, Thursday, 6 p.m., at Firma in Greenbelt 3, Makati.
Michelline is equally well-known as a provocative young sculptor and installation artist. Her intelligent, often astounding works, have their powerful roots in Neo-Surrealism and Neo-Dada, and have been described as “flights of phantasmagoria, dark comedy and the absurd.â€
For her most recent collection, Michelline taps a very broad array of materials typical of her fashion-related work. Her “Yorick†handbags, for instance, possibly the main event of the show, are skulls made of hand-carved wood richly embellished with antique watch parts, pre-fabricated hardware, exotic gemstones and various other odds and ends. The exhibition also includes bracelets, rings, earrings, headdresses and other accessories that cross the line between exhibit-able art and wearable fashion.
