MANILA, Philippines - The United Nations Staff Recreation Council Singers or United Nations Singers, a group almost as old as the UN itself, will be performing for the first time in the Philippines with a gala night concert on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at St. Cecilia’s Hall, St. Scholastica’s College, Malate, Manila.
Composed of present and former staff of the UN in New York and affiliated organizations, the vocal group has performed in the United States, Canada and in many countries of South America, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. Their repertoire includes folk songs, carols and choral music in more than 50 languages. The singers, who are acting as unofficial UN goodwill ambassadors, are often called to perform at cultural festivals, nursing homes, orphanages and official events attended by the UN Secretary-General and other top UN officials in New York City and in many other places.
With their journey of hope to “spread harmony and understanding through the universal language of music,†the UN Singers will also perform in SM Aura and two other malls in Metro Manila. They will also have a mini-concert at the Ramon Magsaysay High School in Manila and the De La Salle Zobel High School in Alabang. Down south they will give a short performance at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and a concert at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Santo Cristo de Burgos Parish, Sariaya Quezon. They end their Philippine tour (organized by UN Singers Philippine Visit 2014 chairperson Isolda Oca) with a visit to the Philippine General Hospital to serenade cancer patients before they depart for New York.
The UN Singers Philippine Visit is being endorsed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as part of its February “Art Month Exhibit†with the special participation of the Madrigal Singers under the auspices of the NCCA.
The proceeds of the concert will go to the St. Scholastica’s Mission Hospital in Pambujan, Northern Samar and to those who were greatly affected by Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban and Ormoc.
