Joya’s ‘Modern Native’ at ManilaArt 2012

A special exhibition of National Artist Jose Joya’s artworks will be on view at this year’s ManilaArt fair at the SMX Convention Center from Oct. 3 to 6.

“The Messenger” by Julius Legaspi

This retrospective show titled “Joya – A Modern Native” — organized by Gallery Big in cooperation with the artist’s family, headed by Josie Baldovino — aims to pay tribute to Joya by displaying two of his large murals from the height of his artistic career in the late ’70s together with a dozen on-the-spot sketches of his many travels abroad. It will also highlight the launch of the limited-edition Joya “Mother and Child” plates which were specially created to help raise funds for the dean’s favorite beneficiary, the Association for Philippine-China Understanding or APCU.

For inquiries, call Gallery Big at 666-7755 or 0922-8064005.

Julius Legaspi at The Art Gallery

Julius Legaspi mounts his first one-man show in an exhibition which opens today at The Art Gallery, Philippine Heart Center, East Ave., Quezon City. The show is on view until Oct. 20.

Julius’ personal experience of extreme poverty instilled in him the simplicity of life as depicted in his painting “Sustenance” with pieces of pan de sal done in soft pastel. In “The Birth of Immortality,” the nudity symbolizes transparency and the simplicity of well-being and a woman’s willingness to give all what’s hers. The white doves are the symbols of the purity of life and all eight doves are there, each one representing each member of the Legaspi’s art group, Walo Visual Artists.
