MANILA, Philippines - The British Council, in partnership with the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA), brings Hip-hop Shakespeare to Manila for a series of workshops and performances from July 3 to 6.
Founded in 2008 by MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist Akala, The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company (THSC) is a music theater production company aimed at exploring the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern-day rappers. Launched in 2009 with the support of British actor Sir Ian McKellen, THSC delivers bespoke education programs offering young people a different view of the arts and ultimately, themselves. THSC also produces interactive live music events/theater productions showcasing the work of up-and-coming young talents who share the stage with established artists and actors. ?
While in Manila, Akala will deliver a workshop at the PETA Theater Center from July 3 to 5. The workshop is for people with an interest/skill in rapping, singing, spoken word, poetry and acting. He will also have live performances at PETA on July 5 and 6.
