Liongoren, Daroy, Vinluan and Carating at Gallery Jose
MANILA, Philippines - Alfredo Liongoren, Antonio Daroy, Nestor Vinluan and Norberto Carating hold their reunion show “4Sight,” which opens on Sept. 15 at Gallery Jose, 67 Gil Fernando Ave., Brgy. San Roque, Marikina City. The show runs until Oct. 15.
The four gravitated towards one another as young art students at the University of the Philippies during the eventful years of the late Sixties and early Seventies. They called themselves “4Sight,” signifying the tetrad perspectives they presented, and obviously, playing on the idea of foresight, the ability to perceive the future.
It was exactly four decades ago that 4Sight held their first group show. Although still searching for their individual styles, their potential had not gone unnoticed as renowned art critics asserted that Liongoren, Daroy, Vinluan and Carating were young artists to look out for.
The show features their latest paintings, sculptures and installation art.
Liongoren creates intensely powerful abstract compositions predominantly in black and white. Recently, he has been showing great command, too, of the figurative idiom to express his passionate viewpoints on contemporary social issues.
Daroy, while based in New Jersey since 1976, has remained active in the art scene here and abroad. From the batik genre paintings in his early years, he has since gone into total abstraction of geometric shapes and colors in banded transparencies to convey “controlled yet well-reasoned aggression.”
Vinluan, who is also an educator, exemplifies the artist fully aware of his artistic vision and direction, and resolutely follows it. His works are landscapes of energies and other intangibles, as well as visual translations of deep awe over the simplicity and grandeur of nature.
Carating’s lined and textured canvasses are deceptively simple and uncomplicated, yet impossible for anyone to replicate, especially in its ability to produce subtle reverberations distinct to each viewer.
