MANILA, Philippines - Olivier Ochanine, the new musical director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, leads the PPO in its final season concert on April 15, 8 p.m. at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Theater. The PPO concert season 2009-2010 is supported by Traders Hotel.
Billed as “Musical Director’s Gala,” the program includes Shostakovich’s Festive Overture in A major, Massenet’s Suite from Le Cid, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 57.
Ochanine conducted the PPO in June 2009 with Enrique Barcelo, PPO principal flutist, featuring the work of Filipino composer Antonino Buenaventura’s By the Hillside at the CCP.
In 2009, Ochanine was selected from a large pool of conductors to study with Gustav Meier and Marin Alsop (Baltimore Symphony) and perform at the 2009 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and Conductors Guild Workshop in Santa Cruz, CA. He also participated in the Rose City International Conductor’s Workshop held each year in Portland, Oregon (with Kenneth Woods, David Hoose, and Christopher Zimmerman presiding). Ochanine was chosen by the legendary Jorma Panula as one of his students in the 2009 master class in Milan, Italy, with the I Pomeriggi Musicali Orchestra.
Until recently, Ochanine has resided in Los Angeles, USA where he has been an avid music educator and freelance conductor. Ochanine is working towards his doctorate degree in orchestral conducting under Mark Gibson at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).
