Pianist Albert Tiu in MMCO's concert at Miriam
MANILA, Philippines - The final concert of the ninth Metro Manila Community Orchestra (MMCO) Concert Season will feature Singapore-based Filipino virtuoso pianist Albert Tiu performing Rachmaninoff’s grand Piano Concerto No. 2 in “Rach 2 Plus” on Nov. 26, 7 p.m., at the Marian Auditorium, Miriam College.
The concert marks the third performance of Tiu with the MMCO who has performed the Rachmaninoff piano concertos cycle, which includes The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Rachmaninoff’s grandiose Piano Concerto No. 3.
Ranked as among the top pianists of the Philippines today, and performing only once a year in the country, Albert Tiu is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Jerome Lowenthal. He received the Juilliard William Petschek Award, resulting in a critically acclaimed debut recital in Lincoln Center’s Tully Hall.
In 1996, Albert Tiu won first prize and two special prizes in the UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria, South Africa. He is also a winner of many international competitions, among them, the Web Concert Hall Competition, the Honens Calgary International Piano Competition, the Paloma O’Shea International Piano Competition in Santander, the Maj Lind International Piano Competition in Helsinki, and the Han Romanson International Piano Competition in Seoul.
Leading the MMCO as conductor and musical director is Josefino “Chino” Toledo who has programmed an enjoyable evening of symphonic classics which includes Borodin’s Overture to Prince Igor, Pajaro’s The Life of Lam-ang, and The Moldau by Smetana.
