Norberto Carating at Hiraya Gallery

MANILA, Philippines - Norberto Carating depicts a clamorous day, often riddled with uncertainties, and burdened with the anticipation for the emerging dark in “Nocturnal Images,” which opens on Nov. 21 at Hiraya Gallery, 530 United Nations Ave., Ermita, Manila. The show runs until Dec. 18.

Carating is considered as one of the country’s finest abstract painters. From his early “lamang lupa” works to his series of geometric abstractions, Carating is a master of his medium.

Most of the time, he works with small squares, treating his canvas from a polyptych point of view, spreading metallic acrylic pigments of gold, blue, green, red and silver across the sheet, and finishing the texture with fragile criss-crossing standards, to depict a benevolent nature. Sometimes he’d whisk layers and layers of paint on the canvas, movement upon movement, until blotches and smudges were left from the chaos, offering a silenced landscape 

Radiating a distinctive luminosity, his new works luxuriate in earthly and metallic colors.

Five shows at Nineveh Artspace

Gallery Genesis holds annual on-the-spot watercolor contest

Gallery Genesis holds its annual invitational watercolor competition-exhibition “Kulay sa Tubig,” which opens on Nov. 20 at Gallery Genesis, Suite 1004, 10th floor, West Tower, Philippine Stock Exchange Rd., Ortigas Center, Pasig City. The show runs until Dec. 18.

The jurors will choose the five best watercolorists for 2009 and five runners-up from among the more than 70 artists invited to join.
