World-class musical greats return to UP Diliman

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) Inc. will stage another grand musical production to celebrate its centennial anniversary on November 21, 7 p.m. at the UP Theater, UP Diliman.

Billed as “Isang Daan Taon ng Musikang Pandaigdigang Antas (One Hundred Years of World-Class Music),” the affair will showcase the greatest singing and musical talents that the University has produced in a two-hour long presentation that will take the audience on a nostalgic and historical musical journey.

“It will be the alumni’s gift to this venerable institution that has made them what they are today — a tribute to their alma mater on this momentous celebration,” said Gari M. Tiongco, UPAA president and UP regent.

All set to return to UP to fill the UP campus with their world-class music once more are foreign-based soprano Evelyn Mandac and tenor Noel Velasco. The show also features sopranos Ana Feleo, Camille Lopez Molina and Aileen Cura; tenors Jimmy Asiñero, Nolyn Cabahug and Eric Ferrer; flutist Antonio Maigue, guitarist Lester Demetillo, violinist Joseph Esmilla; the UP Madrigal Singers, the UP Concert Chorus and the UP Singing Ambassadors and composer Ryan Cayabyab.

Directed by Behn Cervantes, “Isang Daang Taon,” revisits classical pieces, operatic numbers, Spanish tunes, local and international favorites and timeless melodies woven into the 100-year history of the University. The music unfolds by era and tells the story of Philippine life from 1908 to the present as seen through the eyes of the University.
