Rachel Peters: A Bicolana’s journey to the Universe
MANILA, Philippines - Rachel Louise Peters, the lovely maiden from Camarines Sur, is a proud bearer of the Miss Universe-Philippines 2017 title. As of this writing, the idea hasn’t completely sunk in for this Bicolana.
“I couldn’t understand how much of a big deal it was. But thanks to the love and support of my family and friends, I feel really excited, a little bit nervous and extremely blessed. That single moment of triumph brought together all of those who are dear to me,” the stunning Libran gushes.
Rachel admits that being a beauty queen is no childhood dream of hers. But emerging as the fourth Princess at the 2014 Miss World Philippines changed her life and perception about beauty pageants, pushing her further out of her comfort zone.
“When I decided to take the plunge again (in Binibining Pilipinas 2017), there was no looking back. I just kept working hard. I believe there’s a right time and place for everything. When I think of it, this is really the path I want to tread. I worked really hard for it — blood, sweat and tears — for several months,” recalls 25-year-old Rachel, who underwent rigid trainings under the tutelage of the prestigious beauty camp Kagandahang Flores (under Rodgil Flores).
Rachel’s determination to succeed in Binibining Pilipinas definitely bore fruit. “Maybe because the judges saw how much I wanted it; and I know how hard I worked for it,” she shares. Statuesque at 5’8”, the kayumanggi maiden also bagged Miss Photogenic, Jag Denim Queen and Best in Swimsuit special awards during the grand coronation night at the Araneta Coliseum.
“It is definitely an honor to represent our country and wear a crown in an international beauty competition. You just have to know yourself really well. It is very easy to get lost in the drama. Don’t let the negative opinions drown your voice,” she reveals matter-of-factly.
Rachel is an alumna of La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia where she took up Business with a double major in Tourism & Hospitality and Events Management. Rachel has also admitted that she and Camarines Sur Gov. Migz Villafuerte have been sweethearts for three years now.
“I believe in celebrating one’s individuality. In this age of social media, people, especially the youth, feel so much pressure to conform to ideals of beauty. I have suffered from that, too.”
She adds, “I just want to be the voice that reminds people that you don’t need to be like others. You are your own person; you are beautiful. Beauty isn’t all about what you see on the outside; it comes from the inside. Do what makes you happy and be with the people you love.”
Spoken like a real queen.
