Polo action during the high goal match.

The Manila Polo Club thundered with the hooves of horses as polo players showed their skill in playing the “game of kings.” Hosted by Dee Zobel — the widow of Don Enrique “EZ” Zobel — the Enrique Zobel Memorial Polo Cup is a much-anticipated event with society’s elite and polo aficionados in attendance.

Now on its 14th year, the Memorial Cup is held in honor of EZ whose love and passion for the sport is well known. He has the distinction of being the first Filipino president of the Manila Polo Club (1963-1964), and after his death in 2004, the East Polo Field was renamed Enrique Zobel Field in 2005 to honor him. Shortly thereafter, the Memorial Polo Cup was launched.

During the salute and ceremonial ball throw-in, Mrs. Zobel was joined by Manila Polo Club president Isabel Caro Wilson and PGA Cars’ Robert and Benedicto Coyiuto who sponsored the event, supported by Prudential Guarantee and San Miguel’s Ramon Ang, among others.

The polo games began with the four-chukker low goal match that saw the Audi Reds pitted against the Audi Grays, while the three-chukker high goal match was a battle between the Audi Whites and Audi Blacks, with Chadwick Kraml and Santi Elizalde as umpires.

The Audi White team, led by Iñigo Zobel, dominated the high goal game — but everyone was in high spirits during the awarding ceremonies with Jack Clark acting as emcee. The parade of cars that followed of course showcased the award-winning Audi Q7 and the Audi A4 — voted as the Best Luxury SUV and Best Executive Car respectively during the 2017 What Car? Awards, UK.
