Assumpta Infinitas

FAMILY JEWELS - Michelle Dayrit-Soliven - The Philippine Star

A blessed tradition the Assumption Convent is known for is called velada. It is a much-anticipated event that brings AC girls home after many years to their beloved Assumption. More than just a mere presentation by the Jubilarians, the velada is a heartfelt performance to show the character and formation that have brought them together once again — to honor, give thanks, and to give back to Assumption.

After all, the most tangible fruits of the yearly velada are the Assumption mission schools  lovingly run by the sisters all over the country. Indeed, what a bountiful blessing it is when batches of Assumptionistas unite year after year to be able to provide and sustain transformative education to many underprivileged generations.

This year’s inspiring hosts, the high school batch of 1988, had been planning for this momentous velada for the past 10 years leading up to their 25th silver celebration held at the Assumption San Lorenzo in Makati last Oct. 20 in this significant Year of Faith.

“It was truly a batch effort,” said Bubu Antonio-Andres, Maricar Lopez-Tiangco and Mary Faye Rodriguez-Garcia,  who displayed pride and gratitude for all their velada mates and numerous contributors. Their determination to donate as much as they could through various fundraising activities brought about a united and strong bond among themselves that they exceeded their target. The jubilant spirit they exuded upon the presentation of their generous gift to Assumption was cheered on by the homecoming crowd composed of family and friends, proud teachers, fellow alumni proudly dressed in their plaid Assumption uniforms and grateful sisters of the Religious of the Assumption.

The Silver Batch ‘88 enthusiastically shared the stage with celebrating Jubilarians Ruby ‘73 and Gold ‘63. Guest performers included milestone classes of Pearl ‘83, Jade ‘78, Emerald ‘58, Diamond ‘53 and Blue Sapphire ‘48.

The day of the velada began with a thanksgiving Mass in the Chapel celebrated by Fr. Dennis Paez, who reminded the jubilarians to stay in love with Jesus forever in order to live a happy meaningful life. “Your pursuit of Jesus will allow you to know Him, love Him and serve Him with all your heart.” During the Mass, the girls also took time to convey loving thanks to their unforgettable high school teachers.

The program took place at the Mother Rose Auditorium where the Silver Jubilarians’ opening number gave homage to a great and selfless woman — beloved school founder St. Marie Eugenie who continues to be their guide in living a life to honor Jesus as they echoed her very words, “I abandon myself to you without reserve.”

In succeeding numbers, the Jubilarians captured the audiences’ hearts by gracefully dancing to memorable tunes celebrating unity, friendship as they showcased Pinoy pride and love of country. Through anecdotes and wisdom shared, they expressed avid appreciation for their school, which played an important role in their upbringing as strong, socially conscious and service-oriented women of faith, women of action, women of the Assumption.

In a dazzling finale, they joyfully danced with their children looking like angels in heavenly white as they tied up their 25 years of life and legacy with a special message of dedicating their lives to the Almighty. After all, the Jubilarians’ theme for this year is: “Assumpta Infinitas. You are in us forever, O Lord. Your will be done.”

Congratulations, Batch ‘88!
