Going crazy for indie
MANILA, Philippines - So you’re opinionated, eclectic and artsy? And you go against the norm? Then join the club because if the ‘70s brought us the hippie look and the ‘90s brought on grunge, these days, with the influx of social media, bloggers and the so-called “Coachella generation,†we present, the hipster, a.k.a. Indie look.
Street fashion via every pedestrian has become the global runway.
The rules have shifted: from supermodels landing on the pages of magazines to everyday people who’ve got some personal swag worth Instagramming as their #OOTD (Outfit of the Day) and earning “likes†as real-time fashion validation for the world to see.
Clever mixing and matching is key to looking hipster. But where to begin? Here are some basic essentials to copping the look to get you started, without looking like you’re trying too hard.
Hat — Wearing headwear from headbands to fedoras to berets will keep those locks in place while still looking stylish.
Eyewear — If there’s one no-fail accessory everyone must have in his or her fashion arsenal, it’s sunglasses (wayfarers and aviators are your best bet).
With street fashion bloggers at every corner, they can shade you from potentially bad photos swarming the Internet that no filter can save!
Neckpieces — It’s all about edgy, effortless chic. Contrast your graphic tees, sweaters and the likes with a statement necklace (fashion jewelry) for a bit of attitude or wrap a scarf for added warmth or simply layer for added visual interest.
Makeup — To add a pop of color to contrast your dark sunnies, swipe on a bright lip color like NARS Funny Face (a wonderfully fun fuchsia).
If lip color ain’t your thing, you can either go bare (don’t forget your sunblock) or go smoky (eyes) to amp up your overall look.
Achieving the hipster look is also about looking more all-natural than heavily made-up and glam. So skip the heavy foundations and opt for a flush of color instead. Cheek tints like Benefit BeneTint are your best bet for a fuss-free, effortless glow.
Hair — Ever heard of a hot mess? Well, this is the perfect time to pull it off without looking like you’re doing the “Walk of Shame.â€
A messy pony, bun or braid is the most modern and actually, comfortable way to look fashionably low-maintenance.
