Prelude to a kiss

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada - The Philippine Star

(Part 1)

Prom season is upon us once again! To celebrate this most special of teen events, Uptown/Downtown showcases the works of five designers and gets the skinny on their fashion inspiration as well as style advice for those who wish to win the title of Prom Queen!

Ronaldo Arnaldo

Ronaldo Arnaldo loves to do a throwback from the ‘50s. He says the Tiffany blue Mikado silk ball gown in this editorial was inspired by one of the works of Balenciaga. It’s all about structure: consisting of multi- layered circular skirt, a draped bodice with an off-the-shoulder flounces detailing the top. Rows of pailettes, rhinestones and glass beads outline the skirt to highlight the circular structures.

“It is all about drama and making a grand entrance. Instead of the tried and tested embellishments such as beadwork, lace and appliques, I focused on form and structure to come up with something that is both glamorous and interesting that will definitely make a lady stand out.”

The second piece he presents for this column is for the more daring and adventurous lady. Although it is simpler in cut, it’s perfect for a prom with a red carpet or “Hollywood” theme.

Arnaldo adds, “I would advise young ladies to do a little research as to what  their ‘dream’ prom dress would be. A consultation with an established fashion designer would be the next step. A few changes in the cut, proportion and detailing might be necessary to really enhance the figure of the wearer. A lining or corset fitting will determine if the chosen design fits. Remember that the dress will be worn for at least three hours so it has to fit comfortably. Getting the right length with the actual shoes will ensure that the wearer will not trip and can walk around freely. A pair of very high platforms or stilettos is really flattering so make sure that it fits comfortably as well. Getting the right accessories is very important in the overall look. The right hairstyle and makeup is also very crucial. A professional photographer should be hired for the event. Social graces such as table manners should be discussed in a meeting prior to the event. The success of a prom depends on careful planning by the school’s faculty with the students involved.”

Rem Divino

Recently, Rem Divino has been studying the works of Spanish artist Antoni Gaudí and was inspired to do an outfit with his work as a peg. Divino says, “Whether he was working with ceramics, stained glass or ironwork, his whimsical and colorful designs were unmistakably his. My Gaudí outfit would work very well on a young lady who is very confident and who has an expansive and outgoing personality. There is no way one can be missed in this ensemble!”

Divino says that there are many times when young girls come up to him with cutouts of movie stars or models wearing gowns on the red carpet. “I study the photos well and see if the body structure of the celebrities are similar to the  figures of my clients. And if there is a disconnect, then I take the time to explain why these clothes may not be the most flattering for them. Together, we work on solutions.”

Rem always tells his prom clients to take the time out to scout for a reputable hair and makeup artist. “And as they did with me, they should go to this professional weeks before the prom in order to discuss how to achieve the look that they are after. Yes, researching for ideas, booking appointments and discussing looks take time and effort but all the work will be worth it for that special night!”
