Bravo in Manila
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” — Aristotle
The commissioned portraits of Manila’s high society by renowned hyperrealist artist Claudio Bravo are currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. The landmark exhibit, Claudio Bravo: Sojourn in Manila, is presented by the Embassy of Chile and the Energy Development Corp. (EDC). The exhibit opening, led by Chilean Ambassador Roberto Mayorga Lorca and EDC chairman emeritus Oscar Lopez, coincided with the National Day celebration of Chile.
The late Chilean-born artist stayed for six months in the Philippines in 1968. Art aficionados, private collectors, businessmen and family members of the subjects painted by Bravo attended the opening cocktails, among them, US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr., Asia Development Bank president Haruhiko Kuroda, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz,
National Artist Arturo Luz with wife Tessie and Lopez Memorial Museum executive director Cedie Vargas. The exhibit runs until Oct. 20.
