Face of Allure: Yen Santos

- Jerni May H. Camposano -

Manila, Philippines - Eighteen-year-old Lilieyen “Yen” Santos believes that hard work is a necessary ingredient in a person’s success. Hard work, the pretty lass says, helps build character and makes one appreciate the value of things.

“A person’s wealth doesn’t define him. The poorest person is not someone who has no money in his pocket. Rather, he is someone who has no ambition,” declares Yen, the only daughter of Fernando and Lilian Santos. Though their family lives a comfortable life, Yen and her younger brother were taught that to succeed in life, they had to persevere and put passion in their work.

So when the 5-ft-3-in.-tall Yen joined show business after her stint in a popular reality show for teens, she made sure that aside from the financial gain of the job, she also derived a sense of fulfillment from it. “I am now living a dream to be seen on TV and am actually getting paid for it,” she gushes. “But I am aware that the job also requires responsibility, discipline and sacrifice. There are also rules I need to follow.” The Star Magic talent further hones her acting and performing skills by attending training and workshops. “This is an industry where you can’t be complacent. You have to constantly learn and reinvent yourself.”

Yen knows that the entertainment industry can be harsh at times. She is thankful that she has a strong support system in her parents. “My dad and mom always tell me to be physically, emotionally and spiritually strong. I know I have to take good care of my body, practice self-discipline at all times and never lose faith in God.”

Growing up as a very shy and timid kid, Yen is also surprised at how she was able to overcome her insecurities. “As a child, I was the type who wouldn’t join games at birthday parties. I used to hide under tables when I get too shy,” laughingly reveals Yen, whose childhood dream was to become a stewardess. “I wanted to ride a plane and travel the world over.”

Now one of the most promising stars of the country, Yen is living that dream and more. “My career is the best thing that’s happened to me so far. It is both an accomplishment and a dream come true,” she concludes.
