Designer watch: Anthony Tentativa
MANILA, Philippines - There is no doubt that a fashion designer’s dream will always include showcasing in Paris, one of the most prominent fashion capitals of the world. And for Anthony Tentativa, winning the 4th Talents de Mode contest opened a lot of doors.
Though Anthony came from Catbalogan, Samar, he said he started designing in Cebu. “I started my training course in designing when I was in college in Cebu. I used to work as a part-time designer in some boutiques in Cebu while studying,” he said of how he supported himself to school.
He considers himself lucky to have moved to Paris, the city he calls his home for 18 years now. “Paris is the fashion capital of the world. It is a great opportunity for a designer to live here.” His parents, even though he is an only son, supported Anthony in his desire to follow his passion for fashion.
He described that the woman who wears his creations is “an elegant woman, active and dynamic, very feminine and fresh, sensual.”
He looks up to Yves Saint Laurent. “I would like to dress Marion Cotillard someday, and in the Philippines, Vilma Santos-Recto,” he said of his dream clients.
Before winning the contest, Anthony was happily working as a designer for his label Les Tentativas until his wife encouraged him to join the competition.
“It was my wife who insisted that I join this contest. I knew that a big opportunity in France awaited me if I won.” Because of his talent, luck was on his side for he won the contest. His prizes included 5,000 euros, a workshop in Village des Créateurs in Lyon for two years and a booth at the Paris fashion fair Prêt-à-porter in early 2011.
“I know and I believe that God has plans for me and I’ll wait for the right time for everything to happen,” he said.
He also has high praises for Filipino designers. “All designers making waves abroad? They are all great and they are strong and hard workers.”
As for his advice to those who want to become a fashion designer, “My advice for them is to be patient and the right time will come for everyone!”
