Fashion design 101

John Guarnes has slowly but surely been making a name for himself. His mother owned a shop and as early as six, he would cut pictures of dresses from her catalogs and play with her sewing machines. His young life revolved around his mom’s clients, workers and the creative process.

Years later, after finishing his college degree (AB Mass Communications), he landed a job as an assistant for Manna and Wara designer Babette Aquino. No stranger to the competitive field, he has won the grand prize for Australian Fashion Design Competition, was a finalist for Paris Young Designer Competition and was a semi-finalist for Smirnoff Fashion Awards.

Apart from participating in fashion shows, Guarnes is a founding chairman of the Fashion Designer’s Association of the South (Las Piñas) and a faculty member of La Salle-College of Saint Benilde for Fashion Design and Merchandise.

John shares, “My hands-on experience and knowledge as a fashion designer and as a businessman are what I wish to impart to my students. I always believe that everything we possess is not really ours. Talents and possessions are meant to be shared and ultimately, the universe shall return this generosity a hundredfold.”

Guarnes shares his hand-painted creations with Uptown/Downtown!
